In the Ceramics Studio (Grade 10s) ~> Room 1107

Ceramics & Sculpture 10

This course provides students with an enjoyable venue in which to explore their creativity. Students will develop knowledge of processes and techniques for ceramics and sculpture including additive processes (hand building, assemblage), subtractive processes (carving, sanding, filing), modeling processes (throwing, casting), surface treatment processes (polishing, glazing, staining) and decorative processes (engraving, embossing, fretwork). Image development strategies will be explored as they apply to ceramics and sculpture. Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials through working with a range of materials, processes, techniques, and styles. They will learn methods of analysis and criticism to heighten their understanding of art history. Principles of function, design and aesthetics will be addressed and students will develop a personal style in their work. Basic drawing skills will be studied and applied during the planning and creating process for art projects. 



Day One & Day Two:: The course outline and studio etiquette and theory.

 Design your name on your sketchbook folder and on your styrofoam cup name sign.

Working with lettering, design your name on your planning folder. Research lettering styles and experiment to come up with a unique style that appeals to you. Textbook: Reading Chapter One
Process some clay for tomorrow.  Create a sketch plan for a slogan sign....you will utilize many textures in this slogan sign and learn how to work with the slab technique.
Day Three: Process your  clay some more and wedge it then run it through the slab roller and create  a slogan sign. Layer your clay, add patterns, use the stamps, dig in and build out the clay. (Slab technique...handbuilding)
Project: Running through the 3 main types of handbuilding....create a pinch pot owl decoration or lantern. Then create the unique 'bird (Condor) mug.'
Project: Create a sculpture of a garden gnome after creating a plan for the project. Create a door and a window for the gnome's home in a log or create a gnome home bird house.
Project: Mug and handle - to learn handle making techniques and slab technique

Project: Coil technique - Sketch a plan of a coil pot that has 'movement' in the form and visual interest in the coil patterns. ..jewelled coil potsARTISUN: Coil Pots
Project: Sculpting with clay - create a set of book ends after creating your preliminary planning sketch using your knowledge of perspective.
Project: Make and paint a first nations drum and drumstick.
Project: Create an imaginative mask. Roll a slab and put it onto a styrofoam mask base. Create the features and add the details that make your mask unique.
Project: Watch, as a group the video tutorials on creating a mask that is realistic. Build and form realistic features and create a smooth surface. Paint with an underglaze and and sgraffito designs from your zen doodle page. (additive technique)

Project: Create a planter using coil technique but also using design making (zen doodle) type images. Add areas of decorative beads and images between the coils.
Project: A group installation of little wire sculpture figures carrying messages This is for an installation to go in the library. It will have a 'safe caring respectful' school message to it.
Project: Creating a plaster block sculpture.
